Rainbow coalition a viable alternative

I DISAGREE entirely with the sentiments expressed by Cllr John Brassil in his letter headlined ‘Fine Gael bluster’ (Irish Examiner, January 13).

Rainbow coalition a viable alternative

Enda Kenny is an approachable, hard-working leader who has revolutionised the Fine Gael party.

Recent polls shows Fine Gael support moving upward from 27%. With good vote management, this is sufficient to yield 53-60 seats — enough to lead the next government.

Relations between the Fine Gael and Labour Party leaders have never been better and the parties have published joint policy documents in the areas of crime, policing local communities, government waste, health and education, to name just a few. So, an alternative government is available.

Fianna Fáil knows the present Government will not be re-elected and it is desperately searching for suitable coalition partners. Labour leader Pat Rabbitte has consistently refused to support Fianna Fáil in government, and 80% of his party members supported this position at a party conference.

Fianna Fáil will do a deal with anybody — including Sinn Féin — in order to stay in power. The public are aware of this, making a Rainbow coalition option all the more attractive.
