Domestic violence - State apathy is truly mind boggling

THE silence of both Justice Minister Michael McDowell and his junior minister Frank Fahey, amid mounting concerns about the fate of the National Domestic Violence Intervention Agency, is absolutely deafening.

Domestic violence - State apathy is truly mind boggling

Despite providing a highly valuable service by collating all available information on each incident of domestic violence, the agency has been starved of funding by the State since being set up eight years ago.

Thus, over the past three years, funding has stagnated to the point where it can no longer function. It is worth reiterating that it was established after a Department of Justice report identified major failings in the system. Unless money is made available now it will be forced to close down. The seeming indifference of the administration is mind boggling.
