Irish honours system

MUCH has been said lately of Bono following Bob Geldof’s lead and taking a knighthood from Elizabeth II.

Irish honours system

Although I agree in sentiment with the many opponents of such a move, the only practical alternative is for the Republic of Ireland to have an honours system of its own.

This idea has been espoused by Michael Smurfit, and I am inclined to agree. Why not get our own back and give awards to British citizens such as Ken Loach and Vanessa Redgrave, or politicians Ken Livingstone and Tony Benn? Although these four (and there are more) are British, they have been exceedingly kind towards this nation, often at their own expense. This courage requires official recognition.
