Gantly name should be inscribed on Cenotaph

THE Irish Examiner published an article by Senan Hogan under the heading “Garda’s widow backs inquiry into first officer killed in Troubles” (January 6).

Gantly name should be inscribed on Cenotaph

I wish to point out an inaccuracy in the article, which stated: "“Garda Fallon was the first garda to be killed on duty since Garda George Mordant was shot dead in Donnycarney, Dublin, in 1942 …”

However, my father-in-law, Chief Superintendent Sean Gantly, who was head of the Special Branch, in Dublin Castle, was shot dead in the Hammond Lane Foundaries, Pearse St, Dublin, on January 21, 1948. He is the most senior officer to have lost his life in the execution of his duty in this State.
