Vehicle checks are a waste of garda time

IF the regular gardaí were freed to do police work, we would not need a reserve force.

Vehicle checks are a waste of garda time

How much garda time is wasted annually in stopping motorists to check for road tax, etc. Why not avail of technology to ensure every vehicle in the country is taxed, insured and, where necessary, tested?

All other countries in Europe rely on a computerised system to ensure compliance with the law. If we followed suit, the gardaí could get on with the real work and not be compelled to act as tax and vehicle insurance collectors and as an offshoot of the NCT.

Another advantage would be an end to the awful inconvenience of garda roadchecks to the motoring public.
