It’s easy to denounce Haughey 20 years later

OLIVIA O’LEARY’S latest radio essay (Drivetime, RTÉ, December 20) denounced Charles Haughey following publication the day before of the Moriarty report. What took her so long?

Haughey’s excesses happened more than 20 years ago. Where was Olivia then? Only Vincent Browne was asking the awkward questions at press conferences. Was she among the very few who supported Browne or was she another one of those so-called journalists who stood or sat idly by? We’ve always had those who claim to be able to predict the future. Very impressive. Predicting the past? Not so impressive.

So tell us, Olivia, who are Charlie’s successors? What are they doing? Ask the awkward questions now so that nobody will have any excuse in future for asking ‘what took you so long?’
