Government is ultimately to blame for nursing home scandal

THE Government is ultimately responsible for the appalling conditions at Leas Cross nursing home.

The Taoiseach, Tánaiste, former Health Ministers Mary Harney and Michéal Martin, and their respective junior ministers, should bow their heads in shame, if not resign.

Of course, this won’t happen since none of them saw anything wrong with the Taoiseach’s fairytale story of how he saved £50,000 when he was broke.

What happened in Leas Cross was an absolute disgrace.

It could be happening still around the country — it is reminiscent of orphanages in Romania.

And all of this in a so-called first world country.

How come Fianna Fáil backbenchers didn’t protest about this issue like so many of them did about the salmon drift-net ban a few weeks ago?

Is this what the Celtic Tiger has done to our society? Shame on them.
