How to stop: A key lesson for new drivers
We can blame drink and speed, we can point to young men as a high-risk group, but first we should look at the quality of driver training.
I would suggest the first step in learning to drive should be learning to stop.
If driver training began with stopping — emergency braking, in fact — then the learner’s mindset while moving would be constantly conditioned to prepare to stop.
Also, the realisation of how long it actually takes to stop might make learner drivers more mindful of the dangers of speed.
