Corrib protesters should call a halt

AS the Corrib gas line dispute rumbles on, I wish to offer some advice from the other end of the country to the protesters and their supporters.

Corrib protesters should call a halt

The time for protest is over and the costly presence of so many gardaí at the Bellanaboy site entrance has done nothing to win public sympathy for the campaigners.

Shell has been given the right to proceed with the installation and the law must be upheld.

However, if the protesters feel the elected representatives in the area haven’t fully stood by them, they can pass judgement on them at the ballot box next year. The will of the people will out eventually at election time — if the protesters represent the view of the majority, then this will be reflected in the election results from Mayo and possibly elsewhere.
