Battle for Heathrow

RYANAIR’S bid for Aer Lingus will cause bigger headaches for Bertie Ahern and the PDs than the cash gifts scandal.

Transport Minister Martin Cullen’s comments about the Heathrow slots were alarming because he failed to allay concerns that the Government would resist a sale of these strategic assets.

Imagine what will happen if Michael O’Leary has a say on this issue.

The economic and social impact of selling our Heathrow access would be a national disaster. And there is no comfort to be derived from the fact that any decision on their sale would not be in the hands of the Irish electorate.

There is certainly none at all in the realisation that Messrs O’Leary and Cullen can decide our future. God help us.
