The presence of actress Liz Hurley to publicise the funding of cancer research by Estée Lauder provided a photo op for the advertisers, but it also highlighted a great failing of our health service in providing proper breast cancer screening for around half the women in the most vulnerable age group in this country.

John Crown, Professor of Oncology at St Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin, admitted that this country is not doing enough to combat the scourge of breast cancer.

Scientists have not yet discovered the causes, much less an actual cure, but they have long known that early detection provides the best hope of survival for women suffering from breast cancer.
