With the sounds of ‘Ole Ole’ ringing across the fairways and greens of the K Club in Co Kildare, the three-in-a-row win is unprecedented in the modern era. In sporting terms, it underlines how team performances can overpower individuals of the calibre of world number one Tiger Woods.

On an emotion-charged occasion, Darren Clarke’s personal contribution was a fitting monument to the memory of his late wife Heather who recently died of cancer. Similarly, Paul McGinley and Padraig Harrington were marvellous ambassadors for Ireland and the game of golf.
