Should recipes carry fat content?

YOUR farming editor Stephen Cadogan correctly asked whether “retailers and processors can be persuaded to play their part in saving the millions hit by obesity from eating themselves to death?” (Irish Examiner Farming, September 14).

Should recipes carry fat content?

However, a quick look at Darina Allen’s recipe for ‘Besancon apple tart’ (Irish Examiner, September 16) showed the saturated fat content per slice (assuming you only eat one) was equal to that of two full-size Mars bars. This was even before one added the recommended whipped cream.

High saturated fat intake correlates in several studies with an increased incidence of atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease.
