Why it’s safe to criticise Israel
He is rather like Dr Ian Paisley in that you know exactly where you stand with him, and that is the best kind of enemy to have.
Unfortunately, that is not the situation with the people whom Mr Lane supports in the Middle East because lying to attain one’s objectives is a part of the local culture. He knows nothing about the history of the region and his only reason for joining in the debate is to have a go at the Israelis.
On the one hand, it is the strength of a democracy that people like him can express their ignorance in a newspaper and we must ensure this state of affairs remains the basis of our society.
I would like to inform Mr Lane that there is only one country in the Middle East where his opposition to the state would be tolerated, and that is the state he obviously abhors.
If he does not believe me, then I suggest that he take a holiday in Israel and do exactly that.
It would also be an opportunity for him to travel to the Lebanon and Gaza and the West Bank where I am sure he would be received with open arms.
However, if he happened to see anything that was not to his taste in those places I would suggest he keep his breath to cool his porridge.
