Irish soccer ‘slaves’ follow the real action

IN response to Keith Nolan’s letter on the ‘slave-like’ following of English soccer clubs in Ireland (Irish Examiner, September 7), I wish to point out that it’s not just Irish fans who support the Premiership.

Irish soccer ‘slaves’ follow the real action

Yes, it’s true that most soccer-loving Irishmen and women have a favourite English team, but considering we’re adjacent to the land of one of the best, if not the best, football leagues in the world, and that Ireland’s best young players travel over to English clubs as soon as any discernible talent is discovered, it’s only natural that we should take a keen interest.

There are plenty of fans across the globe who lap up the Premiership’s entertainment, so it is not exclusively Ireland’s obsession, as Mr Nolan suggests.

But deep down I think he realises this and it’s just another catalyst for his trademark one-liners.
