We can follow Eddie Hobbs, but not Ros na Rún

THE president of Conradh na Gaeilge, Daithí MacCárthaigh, asks “are we to expect Fine Gael to blame compulsion and call for maths to be made an optional extra for the exam in future in light of the disappointing results in the Leaving Cert?”

(Irish Examiner letters, August 18). It’s funny that despite those disappointing results, most people know a bargain from a rip-off, and when Eddie Hobbs presented a programme last year highlighting the various price scams we have to endure in this country, the general public were glued to the television.

Yet after the same number of years spent studying Irish as maths, how many people could watch Ros na Rún and comprehend it without the aid of subtitles?
