Apologists for Israeli tactics challenged
Tom Carew (Irish Examiner letters, August 17) repeats the Israeli government mantra that Israel does not attack civilians. “Only Hezbollah”, he declares, ‘deliberately targets civilians.”
Brian Lux, in his letter published on the same day, reinforces this official Israeli line by praising what he calls the “care and accuracy” of Israeli bombers.
If Israel does not target civilians and is noted at the same time for the “care and accuracy” of its bombers, how come Lebanon is strewn with smashed homes and dead and mutilated civilians as a result of Israeli attacks?
But then, Mr Lux considers 1,000 dead Lebanese to be an “astonishingly low figure”, while Mr Carew declares in an earlier letter (Irish Examiner, August 9) that they represent a mere “one dead for every five targets hit”.
One wonders what the widows and orphans and parents of this “astonishingly low figure” would think of the utterances of Messrs Carew and Lux?
