Free travel extension just a ploy to win votes

SOCIAL and Family Affairs Minister Seamus Brennan recently announced that he was lifting restrictions on the 600,000 people entitled to free travel.

Free travel extension just a ploy to win votes

The minister claims that “in the 21st century, in progressive and enlightened Ireland, such restrictions are no longer acceptable”.

Yet there has been no announcement of extra transport to meet the increased flow of passengers at peak times.

As many people know, in our progressive and enlightened Ireland, buses are usually overcrowed at rush hour and this move will simply exacerbate the problem. Currently, Ireland has 500,000 people over the age of 65. By 2026, it has been estimated, there will be one million in that category.

This move is a ploy to gain more votes for the Government parties in the next election, but it will have disastrous consequences for those who depend on our transport system every day.
