Something beautiful for harbour island

IN our rush to decide the future of Haulbowline island in Cork harbour, let us not forget the past.

It was home to the steel industry for over 50 years. Two generations worked there through the heat, noise and dust. Some employees lost their lives. They, too, should be remembered.

The people of Cobh, Ringaskiddy and surrounding areas should be consulted. A museum depicting our maritime heritage and shipbuilding should be coupled with that of steelmaking.

Let’s not waste the opportunity to do something really worthwhile with this beautiful island. Something akin to Sydney Opera House would be appropriate.
