Changing times - Our troubled past helps us to move on

ECHOES of the “disappeared” reverberate in every line of today’s story that a nameless Black and Tan was reportedly shot and secretly buried on a windswept bog in North Kerry during “the Troubles”.

This intriguing local legend, said to have occurred over 85 years ago, has a resounding ring of truth about it, as attested by historian and Irish Examiner columnist Ryle Dwyer, author of the book Tans, Terror and Troubles.

Like many another part of Ireland, Kerry suffered severely under the Tans and tit-for-tat IRA reprisals were inevitable.
