IN response to miserable poll ratings for the Government, Bertie Ahern on Monday said he wouldn’t be ‘taking lectures from a party which doubled the national debt in four years’.

This was quite a puzzling comment, given that the only Government in modern times which presided over the doubling of the national debt over a four-year term was the Fianna Fáil Government from 1977-81, led first by Jack Lynch and later by Charles Haughey, in which Mr Ahern was assistant government whip.

There have been many failed strategies and false dawns in the Government’s comical attempts at recovery, but highlighting their own spectacular failures is certainly the most curious to date. Obviously, Mr Ahern thinks glass houses are great places in which to throw stones.
