Stiff sanctions for dangerous driving

AS the number of road deaths continues to rise, I agree with Gay Byrne when he says both he and the Government are doing all they can, but the message to slow down is not being seen by those who need to heed it most.

Stiff sanctions for dangerous driving

The responsibility to reduce the numbers being killed on our roads lies squarely at the feet of the driving public as well as the legislators and the gardaí.

It was suggested recently that murderers, rapists and burglars were not asked to just stop behaving as they do and that it was ridiculous to expect speeding and dangerous drivers to curb their behaviour just because they were asked to do so.

This is not comparing like with like. It is not socially acceptable to commit murder, rape or burglary while for many people it seems to be OK to drive dangerously. Only by making specific behaviour on the roads socially unacceptable will the number of deaths decrease.
