AS an Irish language activist, I would like to point out some ironies in the debate about Irish being a required subject for the Leaving Certificate.

If Conradh na Gaeilge are so incensed about Fine Gael policy, why did so many of its members go to its seminar on Irish last March?

Fine Gael, on the other hand, likes to talk about the “bus loads” (to quote Olwyn Enright) who are choosing not even to sit Irish for the Leaving Certificate every year.
