Hate America? Let’s not confuse country with its foreign policy

MICHAEL HIGGINS (Irish Examiner letters, June 28) is correct — young American soldiers do not create America’s foreign policy. They are just exploited by it.

Some sign up to gain a college scholarship after service. Others — usually poor, uneducated males — are recruited purposefully by the US military. No doubt some are brave, some are heroes, but others behave extremely badly, like all occupying forces.

Witness the recent Haditha massacre in Iraq. I suppose some US foreign policy apologists would say the children killed were potential terrorists.
