Columnist’s view of Israel challenged
I was given the impression that Israel is a wonderful nation blessed with a benign leadership since its foundation. I began asking myself if Rachel Corrie is still alive, because an incredible country like Dr King’s Israel would never crush somebody with a bulldozer.
I even wondered why the UN spends so much time making up nasty resolutions condemning Israeli antics and, of course, how could such a magnificent society ever elect as leader the man responsible for the murder of 1,800 refugees in Sabra and Chatila back in 1982?
Then I saw Dr King’s potted biography at the end of the column and everything made sense.
I would imagine it is as baffling for Dr King to come to terms with those in Irish society who object to British rule in Northern Ireland as it is to understand why there are Palestinians who would like Israel not to exist.
