IT would seem a pity to close Limerick port, our gateway to the sea. Happily, however, the proposal comes just at a time when it seems most obviously misguided.

Current European trends favour short sea shipping in smaller ships that go further, using the ‘roadways’ of the sea. So, just as the tide is changing, just as our ship is coming in, the consultants tell us to shut the port.

These consultants, engaged by the Shannon Foynes Port Co, to whose care for a moment we had entrusted our vital infrastructure, seek to reinvent reality with retail therapy.
