Deport immigrants who commit crime

SERIOUS crime has increased significantly since Veronica Guerin was murdered 10 years ago. No statistical juggling can hide this.

Deport immigrants who commit crime

Successive governments, especially the present FF/PD coalition, have failed to tackle crime despite ever increasing resources at their disposal.

Can the Justice Minister complete one task successfully before his present term finishes so that he can have some positive legacy?

If an immigrant commits a criminal offence, why can’t the law ensure he or she is deported automatically once sentence is completed? This should apply to EU and non-EU citizens alike.

At present, a deportation procedure has to be initiated after time served, and this can take months or years, if ever.

Surely with enough home-grown criminals of our own, such a measure would ease the pressure on the system.
