THE past 11 days in politics was like the hurricane season. The first big blow came. And then calm set in and, with it, complacency.

Yes, there were still storm warnings. But when the big one hit hard, it was sudden, unexpected, vengeful and utterly devastating.

And that desultory moment came for the Government early on Tuesday afternoon when a 41-year-old man walked out of the Bridewell a free man.
