WITH the appalling weather conditions of recent days fuelling fears that global warming is here to stay, pollution in Ireland continues at alarming levels amid Government failure to meet greenhouse gas targets set out in the Kyoto Protocol.

It is not good enough for the Coalition to explain away this grave scenario by saying it was the downside of the Celtic Tiger boom, a situation which, according to the Greens, could leave Irish taxpayers facing fines running to €1 billion.

In a sharp wake-up call for the Coalition, the Central Statistics Office has turned a spotlight on the growing number of cars and trucks on our roads as one of the main contributors to this pollution crisis.
