Issue is too serious for political point-scoring

A LETTER headlined ‘Policy contradiction’ (Irish Examiner, May 16) referred to the efforts of the Munster MEP and Cork South Central TD, Simon Coveney, to introduce legislation to prevent the illegal trafficking of women and children.

Issue is too serious for political point-scoring

I wish to make it crystal clear that there are no contradictions between the work Mr Coveney is doing and Fine Gael’s policy on either human or women’s rights.

What he is doing is trying to pioneer legislation to stop the illegal trafficking of women and children. He is in the process of drafting a bill to be presented in the Dáil on this matter.

This is a very serious issue and it is pathetic that people are attempting to use it to try and score political points.

The focus here must be on human rights and not on trying desperately to undermine Fine Gael with comments and questions that have no backing or substance whatsoever.

Simon Coveney has an office in Cork city and anyone who wishes to discuss this issue further can contact him there on 021 4313100.
