Airport expansion

CORK Airport is to be congratulated for achieving 24.7% growth last month.

Annualising this growth rate, the airport is now handling 3.4 million passengers.

This means that the designed capacity of the new terminal building is exceeded by 400,000 even before it is opened.

How can the Cork Airport Authority extend the terminal if it is carrying a huge debt, or how can it add 200 metres to the runway to accommodate long-haul flights?

No enterprise can carry debt to finance its basic infrastructure — such assets should be provided by the shareholders in the form of equity if the enterprise is to survive.
