Where’s the abortion lesson in baby’s death?

WITH no knowledge of the circumstances or facts in the recent discovery of an abandoned baby’s body in a shed in Co Meath, YK (Irish Examiner letters, May 9) presumes the tragedy offers us lessons on the provision of abortion facilities.

Where’s the abortion lesson in baby’s death?

She says “we need a sex education system that … removes the stigma of abortion”.

YK says “opponents of abortion should ask whether a mother leaving a full-term baby to die in secret is better than a medical procedure in a safe environment where she can receive the necessary counselling”.

The question she poses assumes that the manner in which a child dies somehow impacts on the morality of abortion.

Her vision that a surgical termination is somehow ‘better’ completely misses the point that a just, tolerant society respects the lives of mother and child equally.
