GPO Rising museum is a cheap populist stunt
I think this is long overdue. But you’ll have to excuse my cynicism that this is yet another cheap Ahern/FF populist stunt to win votes by appealing to people who might be fooled by this nonsense.
If such a plan is good enough now, why didn’t they turn the GPO into a museum and cultural centre years ago — for example, 1966, the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising, when major renovations were made to the GPO?
Some people seem also to be under the misapprehension that the whole GPO will be moving lock, stock and barrel to some new location.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
The only part of the GPO that would be relocated is the public office on the ground floor.
Everything else will remain as is. The GPO will remain in all its resplendent glory in the middle of O’Connell Street — one of the few old buildings on the capital’s main thoroughfare left largely as it was.
