The most significant political event to happen in a long time occurred last Sunday. In the course of his This Week interview on RTÉ radio, Bertie Ahern said he believed the Sinn Féin leaders with whom he was negotiating the peace process were at the same time aware that the IRA was planning the Belfast bank heist.

The Taoiseach's remarks will have enduring consequences not only for the Northern peace process but also for politics here in the Republic. Sinn Féin knows this, and that is why they have adopted their usual denial strategy.
