Last week the Central Statistics Office published crime detection figures that showed gardaí solved 72% of murders or manslaughter cases. However, the detection rate for incidents of rape or sexual assault was a pitiful 11%.

This barely one-in-10 strike rate is unacceptable and a betrayal of the citizens brave enough to bring these charges. It, in any language, is indefensible.
