Culture minister Patrick O’Donovan is in a stable condition and recovering with his family after the Limerick TD became unwell in Brussels last week.

A Government spokesperson confirmed Mr O’Donovan did not attend Cabinet on Tuesday.

"His condition, I would describe as stable, but it requires medical management, treatment and care to get him back to full health," the spokesperson said.

The spokesperson said they could not "pre-empt" any further medical advice Mr O’Donovan may receive in the coming days.

Mr O’Donovan returned to Ireland on Friday aboard the Government jet after becoming ill in Brussels.

The Limerick TD has previously spoken about his health and epilepsy, telling the Irish Examiner that he received an epilepsy diagnosis more than a decade ago.

Mr O’Donovan said doctors initially "disputed" the diagnosis.

However, after collapsing in the Dáil in June 2023, he was admitted to the monitoring unit at Beaumont Hospital, where his neurologist diagnosed him with deep frontal lobe epilepsy.

He previously said that, on the day he received the diagnosis, it felt like "the bottom had fallen out of my world".
