Taoiseach Micheál Martin is expected to meet with the leaders of the most powerful countries in the world in December as Ireland is invited to attend the G20 leaders summit in Miami.
The US formally invited Ireland to join the summit as an “observer country”, a Government spokesperson confirmed.
Last year, Ireland took part in its first ever G20 meeting, having been invited by South Africa during the country’s presidency of the group.
Mr Martin attended the G20 summit in Johannesburg last November, while other ministers visited South Africa for individual meetings with their counterparts.
The main summit of the G20 is expected to be held at Trump National Doral Miami, which is owned by US president Donald Trump.
Mr Trump has said the key themes for the US presidency of the G20 will be “unleashing economic prosperity by limiting regulatory burdens, unlocking affordable and secure energy supply chains, and pioneering new technologies and innovations”.
A number of other countries have been invited as guests, including Poland, Spain, Singapore, Uzbekistan, and Kazakhstan.
