Fine Gael is the first party to get its official presidential election process underway by opening nominations today, Monday.
Former EU commissioner Mairead McGuinness, who previously sought a nomination to run for the Áras in 2011, is the frontrunner to be selected as the party candidate.
However, MEP Seán Kelly has not ruled out putting his name forward.
The former GAA president recently met party leader Simon Harris and Fine Gael general secretary John Carroll to discuss the party’s plan for the presidential election. Mr Kelly said:
Nominations will remain open until July 15, with those wanting on the selection ticket required to get the nomination of 20 members of the parliamentary party, 25 Fine Gael councillors, and five members of the executive council.
Recently-retired Joe Duffy ruled himself out of a bid for the presidency over the weekend after days of mounting speculation.

In a statement posted on social media, Mr Duffy said: “To be absolutely clear I am not seeking a nomination from any politicians, local or national, for the office of president.”
Fianna Fáil has indicated that it is likely to wait until the end of the summer to make a decision on its candidate. However, there has been speculation about former minister Mary Hanafin, Unicef head Peter Power, and MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú.
Sinn Féin is also still considering its options after holding a consultation process with members.
Riverdance star Michael Flatley is understood to be considering entering the race, while Independent TD Catherine Connolly is also being talked about.
President Michael D Higgins’ term will conclude on November 11. The election of the next president must take place within the 60 days before that date, meaning the poll can take place any time between September 13 and November 10.
