Gráinne Seoige to contest General Election for Fianna Fáil

Gráinne Seoige is to contest the next general election for Fianna Fáil after three other candidates withdrew from the Galway West selection convention.

Broadcaster and TV personality Gráinne Seoige has been selected to contest the next general election for Fianna Fáil after three other candidates withdrew from the Galway West selection convention.

Ms Seoige was selected at a convention for the constituency in Oughterard in Galway on Friday night.

She will become the second Fianna Fáil candidate to come from the media sector, joining presenter Alison Comyn, who will contest the Louth constituency.

Councillor John Connolly was also selected for Fianna Fáil in the Galway West constituency. Mr Connolly who is a school principal was re-elected to Galway City Council in the Local Elections earlier this year,

Ms Seoige said she was delighted to be selected on Friday: “It is with a sense of pride and belonging that I stand ready to work hard for everyone in this constituency.

“This forthcoming general election will be about shaping the future.

"We face serious challenges today, particularly in the areas of housing, planning, infrastructure, healthcare, education and rural development. These are issues that affect every person young and old in Galway West.

"I’m committed to dedicating myself so that the people of this region continue to prosper.”

Ms Seoige will seek to retain the seat being vacated by Éamon Ó Cuív.

Mr Ó Cuív, a grandson of Éamon de Valera, has served in Leinster House for more than 30 years.

In a statement released last month, Mr Ó Cuív said: “After deep consideration, I have decided not to seek a nomination to stand in the next general election. In the meantime, I will continue to work as usual.”

He joins almost 30 sitting TDs from across the political divide who have announced that they will not be seeking re-election.
