The said the significant increase in asylum seekers arriving here is creating a 'very challenging situation'.

The Taoiseach hopes the announcement of five reception centres across the country for Ukrainians will not spark protests similar to what has been seen in recent months.

Speaking in Boston, Mr Varakdar said: "I think generally speaking when it's come to providing welcome centres, essentially our residential centres for Ukrainians, we haven't seen a large number of protests or difficulties with that. Sadly, the difficulties that have arisen in terms of protests have been more often connected to people seeking international protection, rather than those coming from Ukraine."
