Sabina Higgins, the President’s wife, is currently receiving treatment for breast cancer, Áras an Uachtaráin has confirmed.
In a statement this afternoon, Ms Higgins said that she underwent a successful procedure as part of continuing treatment for breast cancer.
Ms Higgins said that following her diagnosis, she wanted to ensure that all women were aware of the symptoms of breast cancer, asking that people undergo checks regularly.
“I would like to take the opportunity of my diagnosis to call on all women to be aware of the symptoms of breast cancer and to seek checks as regularly as they can,” Ms Higgins said.
“It may come as a surprise to many people to learn that the risk of breast cancer increases with age and that 36% of women diagnosed with breast cancer in Ireland are over the age of 70.
“While BreastCheck screening runs for women up to the age of 69, I would urge all women over the age of 70 of the vital importance of continuing to look for any potential symptoms of breast cancer on a regular basis and to seek medical checks whenever possible.”
Over the summer, President Michael D Higgins underwent an elective procedure to relieve back pain. During a short rehabilitation programme, Mr Higgins continued to work from both Áras an Uachtaráin and his home in Galway, while reducing the number of public engagements.
He continued to fulfil his constitutional duties, including the consideration of legislation, during that time.
