Three brothers have pleaded guilty to their roles in a violent attack on a man who was lured to a shed in Waterford over a drug debt.

Michael McDonagh, 30, of 11 Meadow View, Cahir, Co Tipperary, Andrew McDonagh, 28, of 35 Ballytruckle Road, Waterford city, and Bernie Patrick McDonagh, 19, of 11 Dun Uisce, Cahir, Co Tipperary, admitted their roles in the assault.

Investigating Detective Garda Sean Lane appeared in court on behalf of the State to outline the facts of the case.

Drug debt

The victim had been paying the McDonaghs €200 a week towards a drug debt of €4,000. Andrew subsequently “bought” the debt and increased it to €14,000 “for no reason”.

On October 14, 2025, the victim was lured to a shed at 5 The Crescent, St John’s Park, Waterford city, in relation to the debt. All three men attacked him using copper pipe bars and a hammer.

The court heard that Michael laughed as the victim pleaded with him to stop. One of the brothers said: “You fuck with one of us, you fuck with all of us.”

Michael McDonagh grabbed the victim by the scruff of his neck and threatened to “go after” him if he told anyone. He also made a similar threat against the victim’s partner and family.

The victim was unable to walk for three days after the attack. He suffered a bleed on the brain, a fractured skull and spine, broken fingers and cracked knuckles.

He spent six nights in University Hospital Waterford (UHW) and requires physiotherapy.

Gardaí found six vials of blood on the floor of the shed that matched the victim’s DNA profile.

He made a formal statement to Gardaí in January 2026 after a member of his family was intimidated by one of the defendants.

Bail application described as ‘morally wrong’

Michael McDonagh was refused bail in Waterford District Court in January 2026 and taken into custody. On Thursday, October 8, he pleaded guilty to assault and the use of copper pipes during a video-link hearing.

Andrew and Bernie Patrick had pleaded guilty to their roles in the attack earlier in the week.

Andrew and Bernie Patrick also sought to vary the conditions of their High Court bail to allow them to go on a family holiday to Tenerife later this month.

Det Garda Lane told Judge Eugene O’Kelly that allowing the men to go on holiday while their victim continued to suffer would be “morally wrong”.

“It sends out the wrong message to the victim and the community,” he said.

Det Garda Lane added: “I didn't believe that the defendants would be looking to go on holidays.”

The court heard that Andrew had breached his High Court bail conditions on eight occasions, most recently on September 27.

Judge O’Kelly refused Andrew’s application to vary his bail, citing the severity of the attack and his breaches of bail conditions. He also highlighted the level of blackmail, intimidation and extortion involved.

Andrew was taken into custody. Counsel for Bernie Patrick withdrew the application to vary his bail conditions.

The three brothers will appear before the court on January 13 to fix a date for sentencing.
