Cork traffic and weather: Chance of isolated thunderstorms as hundreds remain without power

Met Éireann has said that although some heavy showers with thunderstorms will affect parts of Cork this morning, the weather outlook should improve as the day progresses.

There will be a mix of sunny spells and showers this afternoon on Leeside, some heavy with a chance of isolated thunderstorms.

Highest temperatures will range from 14 to 18 degrees, with moderate to fresh southerly winds, decreasing mostly moderate later in the day.

Following strong winds and heavy rainfall on Tuesday, hundreds of homes across Cork have been left without power.

Areas affected include Foxhole in Youghal where 574 ESB customers are affected, Macroom where 934 customers are affected and Skibbereen where 18 properties have been impacted. 

The ESB has apologised for the loss of supply and is currently working to repair the faults. 

Weather conditions tonight will become dry in many areas with clear spells, as showers gradually become confined to western counties. 

Lowest temperatures will be between five and nine degrees.

Traffic

There is a multi-vehicle collision, westbound, on the N40 South Ring Road between Junction 10 Mahon and Junction 9 (N28) Ringaskiddy (Cork).

A spokesperson for TII Traffic Ireland said: “Some delays to your journey may occur. When approaching the collision location, drive with caution, reduce your speed and please obey instructions from emergency services” 

There also is a vehicle breakdown on the N40 westbound between J7 South Douglas and J6 (N27) Kinsale Rd.

Outlook for rest of week 

Thursday morning will be mainly dry with sunny spells. 

In the afternoon, showers, turning heavy at times, will develop in the west and will then spread eastward through the late afternoon and evening. 

Highest temperatures will be between 14 to 17 degrees.

On Thursday night, rain will spread eastwards across Ireland. 

It will clear to the east by morning with showers following from the west. 

Friday will bring bright or sunny spells and showers, some possibly heavy. 

Showers will mostly clear to the east in the evening. 

Highest temperatures of 14 to 18 degrees with moderate southwest winds. 

Friday night will be mainly dry and quite chilly with clear spells, light breezes and lowest temperatures of five to eight degrees.

Saturday will be mainly dry with bright or sunny spells, the best of these over Munster and Leinster.
