HSE confirms distressing video circulating online was not filmed at UHL

HSE Mid West has confirmed a video which was widely circulated on social media showing a distressing interaction between an elderly patient and a health professional was not filmed in its hospitals.

A relative of a woman who was thought to be the patient contacted the media after viewing the footage online. At the time the HSE Mid-West said it was aware of the video, which showed an interaction between a female patient who appeared confused and a health care assistant. 

“The footage is deeply concerning, and the behaviour depicted is wholly unacceptable. It falls far short of the standards of dignity, respect, and compassionate care that all patients are entitled to expect,” a spokesperson said.

The HSE said at that point it would carry out an investigation into the footage, to identify the service involved and the specific location, date, and full circumstances surrounding the incident.

On Sunday it said that investigation has confirmed that the video "does not show the patient identified in media reports, did not occur in University Hospital Limerick or any HSE Mid West facility, and does not involve a member of UHL or HSE Mid West staff".

"The hospital where the incident actually occurred (outside of HSE Mid West) has confirmed that the footage originated there." 

The HSE said the patient involved has been identified and the family concerned has been informed.

"Separately, HSE Mid West informed the family whose relative had been incorrectly identified in media reports on Friday evening that the video does not show their family member and is not footage from UHL."

It also said it was concerned about the impact of the incident on staff across the Mid West, "many of whom were subjected to criticism, abuse and threats in relation to an incident for which they had no involvement or responsibility". 

"Scrutiny of healthcare services is legitimate and necessary; abuse and threats are not," the HSE added. 

“Our focus throughout has been on establishing the facts, protecting the dignity and privacy of the patients and families involved, and supporting our staff. 

"We believe that was, and remains, the responsible approach.”
