Limerick community 'devastated' following major blaze in Croom

Firefighters worked overnight to bring the blaze under control.

The fire broke out in a local garage and spread to several adjoining homes, with some homes and several cars left badly damaged.

Firefighters worked overnight to bring a major blaze under control in Croom, Co Limerick, which left residents “shocked and devastated”.

Emergency services, gardaí and 11 fire appliances attended the scene at a garage on the Main Street in Croom, at approximately 11.10pm on Monday evening.

The fire broke out in a local garage and spread to several adjoining homes, with some homes and several cars left badly damaged.

Limerick Fire and Rescue issued a statement on social media following the fire.

“Overnight, crews from Rathkeale, Newcastle West, Kilmallock, Cappamore and Limerick City attended a commercial fire in Croom.

“Crews worked hard to limit the spread of fire to adjoining premises, and utilised an aerial rescue platform and water tankers to assist in dealing with the blaze. 

“Our thanks to members of the local community and business owners who supported our crews throughout the firefighting operation," they said. 

Limerick TD and minister of state at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Niall Collins said the Croom community has been left “shocked and devastated” by the “freak accident”.

He noted the local community rallied to together and provided shelter to those affected by the blaze.
