A concert ticket scam landed a Co Clare man before Waterford District Court last week.

Aaron Moran, aged 37, of Apt. 7 32-40 Parnell Street, Ennis, Co Clare, was charged with making gain or causing loss by deception on September 7, 2023, at an address in Tramore.

Evidence was heard that a Tramore woman bought two concert tickets worth €130 from Mr Moran, but never received the tickets or a refund.

There was a delay in the matter being investigated by gardaí, due initially to a garda member retiring – it took 15 months, from the date of the original complaint in September 2023, for Gardaí to take a statement.

While the delay was “not good”, Judge Kevin Staunton said, however, that he did not believe the delay had prejudiced Mr Moran.

Ken Cunningham, solicitor for the defendant, said that his client had previously suffered from a gambling addiction but had come out the other side. He also had compensation in court for the woman.

He has 41 previous convictions.

Judge Kevin Staunton said: “This is a particularly nasty and all too common type of behaviour in society today. It’s a scam essentially. It is a particularly unpleasant crime.”

He also noted in relation to Mr Moran that there was “a pattern of behaviour”.

“This is what he does… he’s not a novice.”

He convicted and sentenced Mr Moran to six months in prison. Recognisances were fixed in the event of an appeal, in Mr Moran’s own bond of €500.
