A motorcyclist was taken to hospital following a collision that closed the South Mall in Cork city on Thursday morning.

Gardaí, paramedics, and units from Cork City Fire Service attended the scene at the corner of South Mall and Morrison Street at around 8am following a collision involving a motorbike.

It is understood that the motorcyclist collided with a construction digger shortly after 8am.

The male motorcyclist, after being struck, fell from the bike and was thrown some distance.

He was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital.

The street was closed for a time, with gardaí diverting traffic away from the area, but it reopened shortly before 9am.

"Gardaí and emergency services are at the scene of a road traffic incident at South Mall, Cork, this morning," a garda spokesperson told the Irish Examiner.

"As this incident is ongoing, there is no further information at this time."
