Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene on Athlunkard Street at around 9.40pm on Tuesday.

A man in his 20s has been charged in relation to an assault which happened in Limerick City on St Patrick's Day.

Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene on Athlunkard Street at around 9.40pm on Tuesday.

The injured man, in his 50s, was taken to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for serious injuries. 

The scene between the junctions of Island Road and the Corbally roundabout was closed for a time to allow gardaí to carry out a technical examination. 

A man in his 20s was arrested by gardaí and is now due to appear before the courts on Thursday morning. 

"Investigations are ongoing," a garda spokesperson said.
