Two men in serious condition after separate St Patrick's Day assaults in Limerick city

Two men are in serious condition following separate assaults in Limerick city on St Patrick’s Day and in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
In the first incident, a man in his 50s was seriously injured in an assault on Athlunkard Street at around 9.40pm on Tuesday.
Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene, and the injured man was taken to University Hospital Limerick, where he remains in a serious condition.
A man in his 20s has been arrested in connection with this incident and is currently being detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda station in the Limerick division.
The scene between the junctions of Island Road and the Corbally roundabout remains closed to allow gardaí to carry out a technical examination. Local diversions are in place.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Any road users or pedestrians who were in the Athlunkard Street area between 9pm and 10pm on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, and who may have camera footage — including dash-cam — are asked to make it available to investigating gardaí.
In a separate incident, a man in his 20s is also in serious condition after an alleged assault in Limerick city in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene on St Alphonsus Street at around 3am.
The man was taken to Cork University Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.
The scene remains preserved to allow gardaí to carry out a technical examination.
Gardaí are again appealing for witnesses to come forward.
Any road users or pedestrians who were on St Alphonsus Street or in the vicinity of Dock Road or Henry Street during the early hours of Wednesday, March 18, 2026, and who may have camera footage — including dash-cam — are asked to make it available to investigating gardaí.
