Limerick Greenway is the first in Ireland to offer a full virtual reality (VR) tour of its entire route, giving users an immersive digital experience of the 40km stretch from Rathkeale to Abbeyfeale.

The initiative, developed by Limerick City and County Council, allows people explore the greenway via VR headsets, mobile devices, or web browsers, allowing global audiences — and those unable to travel the route — to experience the journey through Ardagh, Newcastle West, and Templeglantine.

The immersive tour was officially launched at the Limerick IT Summit 2026 at the Dell Technologies Campus, and captures the natural beauty, heritage, and engineering landmarks along Limerick Greenway.

Mayor John Moran said the project positioned Limerick at the forefront of “smart tourism” and digital innovation in Ireland.

“By combining our stunning landscape and rich heritage with cutting-edge virtual reality technology, we are opening Limerick Greenway to the world," he said.

"Whether someone is planning a visit, learning about our history, or experiencing the route from afar, this initiative ensures Limerick is accessible, inclusive and globally connected."

Over an eight-month period, Global Virtual Asset Management (VAM) Ltd, in partnership with the tourism department of Limerick City and County Council, conducted an extensive VR mapping and 360-degree capture of the route.

The project includes immersive experiences from more than 20 top locations and attractions across Limerick City and County, including King John’s Castle, Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trail, and Adare.

Council director general Pat Daly said: “With the Ryder Cup coming to Adare in 2027, global attention will be firmly on our region.

"This technology provides an innovative way for overseas audiences to explore Limerick in advance, discover the breadth of what the county offers, and plan extended stays beyond the event itself.”

Limerick Greenway reopened in 2021 following a €10m upgrade and has attracted 1.5 million visitors to date.
